Dance Seniors Present Original Choreography

Senior School of Theatre and Dance students have prepared original choreography for the 2019 Senior Choreography Dance Concert.

A few of the senior choreographers shared their thoughts about their pieces before the performances premiere.

Olivia Chesneau’s piece, “Without being empty,” focuses on exploring the ideas of a rotating sphere and the constant push and pull of energy. Olivia said, “I wanted to dive into a world where the dancers were all rooted together, imaging that we are all different versions of ourselves but exploring what sets us apart and what brings us back together.”

Shannon Wright, one of the student concert coordinators, said that her piece “is structured around the concept of the power of many voices versus just one.” There is strong imagery of the power in numbers and a combination of formal choreographic elements with more abstract themes in her piece titled “concurrence.”

Senior Choreography is the capstone project for all graduating seniors. The students go through all phases of the concert production process including auditing and casting dancers, rehearsing several times per week, lighting and costuming their works, and putting on an evening-length dance concert. Megan Shepherd and Shannon Wright, two students in the class, are also serving as the concert coordinators, so they learn the administrative and design side of putting on a show.

Come and see all their hard work come to fruition. The dances you will see will keep you coming back for more!

Performances will be held February 9 at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and February 10 at 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the Archie Burnette Studio Theatre on campus. Tickets are $5 and are available at ECUarts.com
