Josiah Stocker is currently Instructor and Music Director at East Carolina University’s School of Theatre and Dance. His past work in theatre has included productions by Idaho Repertory Theatre, ECU’s Loessin Playhouse, Jewel Theatre in Santa Cruz, CA, InSeries Opera in Washington, DC, and a KCACTF Meritorious Achievement Award in Musical Direction for the University of Idaho’s production of Grease.
He was previously Staff Pianist at Middle Tennessee State University, where he collaborated with faculty and guest performers including oboist Ari Cohen Mann, clarinetist Bixby Kennedy, flutist Nicole Molumby, the 2024 Southeastern Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference, and the 2024 Orpheus Vocal Competition. Prior to MTSU, Josiah worked at UC Santa Cruz, where he played harpsichord for the university’s production of Purcell’s The Faerie Queen with conductor Bruce Kiesling, performed with the Santa Cruz New Music Ensemble under Phil Collins, and joined the Santa Cruz Chamber Players recital series with soprano Emily Sinclair and violist Polly Malan.
Josiah’s summer engagements have included Interlochen Summer Dance Ensemble, where he composed and arranged for choreographers including Jennifer Lott, Michael Spencer-Phillips, and Steve Beirens; Aspen Summer Music Festival, including performances with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble under Donald Crockett and the Aspen Philharmonic under Ludovic Morlot; and three summers as head of the piano department at Camp Encore/Coda in Maine. He and his wife, Hyeeun Hahm, have performed duo concerts including the Korean-American Scholarship Foundation’s annual gala in Atlanta, GA; UP for Arts in Tacoma, WA; and the Saint Rose Camerata in Albany, NY.
Josiah received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Collaborative Piano from the University of Maryland, where he studied with Rita Sloan, and a Master of Music degree in Accompanying from the University of Idaho, where he studied with Jay Mauchley.
