Bryan Conger is Associate Professor of Theatre and Assistant Director of the School of Theatre and Dance at East Carolina University, where he teaches acting, directing, musical theatre, and professional preparation. He previously served as Co-Artistic Director of the Loessin Playhouse.
Before joining East Carolina University, Bryan served as Interim Artistic Director of Cape Fear Regional Theatre and as Artistic Associate at Triad Stage, one of the nation’s leading regional theatres. His professional experience spans directing, producing, dramaturgy, casting, artistic administration, and new play development, giving him a broad perspective that informs both his teaching and creative work.
As a director, Bryan has staged productions ranging from classic plays and contemporary dramas to large-scale musicals. Some his directing credits at ECU include Legally Blonde, Sweeney Todd, Company, Pride and Prejudice, Bright Star, Head Over Heels, Into the Woods, and Young Frankenstein. His directing work has also been seen at Triad Stage, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, Marshall University, the Broadway Bound Theatre Festival in New York City, and other professional and educational theatres. Some of his favorite credits include Caroline, Or Change, My Fair Lady, Dirty Blonde, Deathtrap, and the world premiere of Skeletons. Whether directing a musical, a new work, or a classic text, he is committed to creating collaborative rehearsal environments that challenge artists while fostering creativity, curiosity, and trust.
Bryan has a taught at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Greensboro College, Elon University, and Guilford College. He is also a member of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and Theatre Communications Group.
Above all, Bryan is passionate about helping students discover their artistic voice while developing the professional skills needed for meaningful, sustainable careers in theatre. He strives to create an environment where every student is challenged to grow as an artist, a collaborator, and a leader, while discovering the confidence to tell stories that make a lasting impact on their communities.
